Guide: Choosing A Computer For Malaysian Business

Last Updated: 25 June 2020

Operating System For Malaysian Business

1. Introduction: Know What Is The Main Use Of The Computer

I’ve been building PCs and recommending IT hardware since I was in high school (in the year 2000). Computer users generally fall under 1 of the following category:

CategoryTasks & Applications Examples
Casual Home Use & Media ConsumptionWeb Browsing, Social Media, Watching Videos on Youtube or Netflix.
School homework and assignments.
Games with low system requirements.
Office ProductivityTypical Malaysian office work.
Microsoft Office suite, reading and printing documents.Internet Browsers such as Google Chrome, WhatsApp Desktop, Video Call, Microsoft Word Document, PowerPoint Presentation, Excel, Adobe PDF.
3D GamingPlaying recent 3D Games.
Professional Work (Non Graphic Intensive)

Software Development, Website Development, Social Media Management, Graphic Design, Creating PDF, Creating Flyers and Brochures.

Accounting Software, UBS, SQL, AutoCount.

Professional Media Creation

Video Editing, 3D Animation Rendering.

CAD, CAM Design, Blender, AutoCAD, Photoshop, MasterCAM, Solidworks

First determine what will the computer be used for, and you’ll have a much easier time picking the other components.

2. Operating System: How the PC works

– Microsoft Windows: is the most common operating system used in Malaysian office computers. We recommend using Microsoft Windows for the best compatibility and familiarity among all users.

– Mac OS: is only available on Apple products, it has a different user interface compared to Microsoft Windows. It also has better integration for iPhone and iPad users.

Linux: is a free Operating system for security conscious users. While capable, most Malaysians aren’t used to the user interface and limited applications options.

ChromeOS: is only available on Chromebooks. ChromeOS is a free Linux kernel-based operating system designed by Google. This operating system is designed to run most of the applications online. It is worth considering if you have high speed internet access on the go. Not recommended if you frequently travel to areas without Unifi or Maxis Fibre.

3. Form Factor: Size of PC

A. Desktop PC

is a full-sized desktop computer with the option to upgrade parts, such as processor, graphic cards, and storage devices.

Recommended for gaming or any other professional works such as media production, editing, or design.

Models to Consider:
Workstation: HP Workstation Z800/Z820, Dell Precision T7910/T5610.
Tower: Dell Optiplex 3040/3020, HP Elite 6200/8300).

B. Mini PC
(Ultra Small Form Factor USFF/ Ultra Slim Desktop USDT/Small Form Factor SFF):
is smaller in size and works just like a desktop PC. The main drawback is the lack the room for more powerful components such as a higher-powered graphics card and additional storage options.

Recommended for normal office tasks such as typing documents or browsing any websites.

Models to Consider:
Small Form Factor: HP Elite 8200/8300
Ultra Small Form Factor: HP Elite 8200/8300

C. All-in-One (AIO):
All-in-One computers integrate the computer case and system components into the monitor so that the entire PC is contained as one unit. They overall have a lower power consumption compared to a normal desktop PC.

Some of the AIO computers come with touchscreens, making it simpler for users to control their PC. Extremely limited upgrade options.

Ideal for limited space scenarios.

Models to Consider: Dell Optiplex 9030 AIO

D. Laptop:
A portable, thin, and light personal computer with a built-in monitor screen, batteries, keyboard, and touch pad.

There are 3 categories of laptops.

i) Consumer Laptop

The first is the thin & light laptop meant for casual usage.

ii) Gaming Laptops

Gaming Laptops are heavy, thick and the internal fan can be quite loud. As the name suggests, these laptops are meant for gaming, not something you’ll bring for your business presentation.

iii) Business & Professional Laptops

For business and professional usage, we recommend business class laptops. These laptops are pricier than consumer laptops as they have extra security features, more durable components made to last, better warranty and service from the manufacturer.

Models to Consider:

For Home Use or Malaysian Office Usage: Dell Latitude E7440
For Professional works: Dell Precision M6800 Mobile Workstation

Processor For Malaysian Business

4. Processor: Brain of PC

– Intel or AMD: Intel processors generally have better software and hardware compatibility; they generally work with less issues. AMD processors have better graphic processing capabilities but have more drivers and compatibility issues.

– Number of cores: A higher number of cores enable a user to move quickly between different software windows and have more apps and tabs running simultaneously.
Graphic related applications such as Blender, Solidworks, Adobe Premiere Pro and other video editing software benefits greatly from additional cores.

– Clock speed:Everything else equal, processors with higher clock speed are faster.

– Cache Memory: A bigger memory cache allows the processor to work faster.

The faster the processor is, the more expensive it will be. Here are our processor recommendations based on the main usage of the computer.

5. Memory (RAM): A place for storing the data for immediate processing The role of the RAM is to feed the processor data. The faster data can be fed to the processor, the faster a computer will perform. This is why adding additional RAM can be very cheap way to improve the performance of a computer. We recommend the following memory configuration according to the main usage of the computer.
Memory Size Recommend Usage
2 GB Recommended Minimum for Year 2020.  Do Not Go Below This.
4 GB Office Productivity Applications. Sufficient for tasks such as writing documents and creating spreadsheets.
8 GB Mainstream Gaming.
16 GB Premium Gaming While Livestreaming. Graphic Related Applications and Web Development.
32 GB Professional media creation such as 3D animation, music, or video editors, engineers.
Over 32GB For building servers and workstations.
Storage Drive For Malaysian Business

6. Storage (HDD or SSD): Long-term data storing location
Choosing storage device for computers used to be as simple as “buy as much as you can afford”. In 2020, business can choose between high capacity hard disk drives (HDD) or high speed solid state drives (SSD).

Why Are Computers Getting Slower The Older It Gets

Ever had the feeling of “the computer gets slower and slower the older it gets”? One of the main reasons is disk fragmentation. As we use the computer, data gets stored all around the hard drive and takes a longer time to be retrieved.

We solve this problem by using SSDs in all our computers and hence why our refurbished computers potentially perform faster than brand new computers.

– Hard Disk Drives (HDD): are the most common type of desktop PC storage, with mechanical parts, platters, and an actuator arm. It accesses data mechanically, so it is slower compared to an SSD.

– Solid State Drives (SSD): consists of a circuit board and chips, with no mechanical parts. It is very fast in reading and writing since SSDs access data electronically.

As for how much storage is recommended, it depends on what is the primary usage of the computer. Here is a table for our recommendations:

Storage Size

2 TB2 TBFor Professional Work, Website Designing and Programming.
4 TB and beyond4 TB and beyond

For Servers and Workstations.

Professional media creation: 3D animation, music, video editors, and engineering software.

7. Monitor
Monitors aren’t as clear-cut and easy to recommend as aesthetics can be rather subjective. That being said, we have generally monitor recommendations based on the main usage of the computer.

Thickness: Generally slimmer or thinner monitors are more preferable.

Bezel: The “border” of the monitor. Generally the thinner the bezel the better. If you plan on having a multi-monitor setup, do consider “border-less”, “frame-less” or monitor models without bezels.

Panel: There are 3 types of panels.
For the sake of simplicity,
we recommend VA Panel if you are looking to lower your purchase cost,
TN panel for high refresh rate competitive gaming and
IPS panel if color accuracy is important for you.

Here is an in depth comparison among the 3 panels:

We generally do not recommend touchscreen monitors outside of niche situations such as building a Point of Sale (POS) System

8. Other things to consider

Design: The physical appearance and color of the computer. Just pick what looks nice to you.

Dedicated graphics: which means having a discrete graphics card. This is essential for more demanding games, video editing, and 3D animation work.

Built-in Webcam/Microphone: Covid19 has forced many businesses to start using video conferencing. To appear professional during the video conference, we recommend getting at least a 720p webcam and a reasonable mic. Though they can always be bought separately at another time.

Other Accessories: Extra peripherals such as headsets, high precision mice and mechanical keyboards.
We do not recommend mechanical keyboards for office computers as the keystrokes will be very loud and inappropriate for a business environment.

8. Conclusion

“All this sounds overwhelming, is there a quick & easy way?”

In fact, yes there is.

If you are just buying a single unit for personal use, just buy what fits your budget.
